Evaluating the Performance of Electric Vehicles in Cold Climates: Issues and Innovations
Main Article Content
Abstract
The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is a crucial step towards achieving sustainable transportation. However, their performance in cold climates presents significant challenges that could impede widespread usage. This paper evaluates the impact of low temperatures on the efficiency, range, and battery life of EVs. We explore the technical issues, such as reduced battery capacity, longer charging times, and decreased regenerative braking efficiency, that are exacerbated in cold environments. Additionally, we analyze innovations aimed at mitigating these challenges, including advanced thermal management systems, battery preconditioning, and the development of new materials and battery chemistries. Through a comprehensive review of current research and case studies from regions with harsh winters, this paper provides insights into the effectiveness of these solutions and identifies areas for further innovation. The findings aim to guide manufacturers, policymakers, and consumers in understanding and improving EV performance in cold climates, ultimately contributing to the broader adoption of electric vehicles.
